I definitely think you’re on to something there, Ryan. I also wonder if part of the compulsion to embody the “normate gay” type is to not only replicate the “neutrality,” as you say, of cis, white, straight men, but to be even better by being/looking more muscular, masculine, and desirable as a way to mitigate the culturally-imposed shame of queerness.
