Thank you, Lois! In writing this piece, I found Ka’ahumanu’s and Loraine Hutchins’ landmark anthology Bi Any Other Name: Bisexual People Speak Out helpful, particularly the introduction and Ka’ahumanu’s autobiographical poem “Hapa haole wahine.” I also consulted Ka’ahumanu’s speech from the 1993 March on Washington for Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights. My analysis of bisexual erasure in the Gay Rights Movement was influenced by the works of Shiri Eisner and Julia Serano.
